Shreveport Kickoff Classic Football Game to Kick Off Labor Day Weekend
Grambling State University vs. Langston University

Shreveport-Bossier, LA – The inaugural Shreveport Kickoff Classic is bringing high energy to Shreveport-Bossier on Labor Day Weekend as Grambling State University takes on Langston University on Saturday, August 30 at 7:00 PM at Independence Stadium.
“We are deeply honored to welcome two proud HBCU institutions—Grambling State and Langston University—to Shreveport for the 2025 Shreveport Kickoff Classic,” said Tom Arceneaux, Mayor of the City of Shreveport. “This game not only ignites the spirit of competition on the field but also celebrates our city’s rich cultural legacy and commitment to community pride. We look forward to creating an unforgettable experience for fans, students, and families throughout the entire weekend.”
Independence Stadium will serve as the backdrop for a dynamic weekend celebrating the heritage, pride, and culture of two historic HBCU programs.
“This event represents more than a football game—it is a powerful tribute to tradition, excellence, and the enduring legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Stormy Gage-Watts, President of the Caddo Parish Commission. “I am proud to support this historic matchup to our community and invest in a weekend that brings together families, alumni, and fans from across the region to celebrate culture, community, and collegiate pride. We look forward to hosting an unforgettable experience that reflects the spirit and hospitality of Caddo Parish.”
That impact resonates with state leaders who have a personal connection to the event. “As a proud Grambling alum and former band member who grew up watching Grambling play an annual game in Shreveport, I’m honored to help bring this tradition back to Shreveport,” said Steven Jackson, Louisiana State Representative. “The State of Louisiana is proud to support the Shreveport Kickoff Classic as it returns to Northwest Louisiana. Events like this not only celebrate the legacy of our HBCUs but also generate meaningful economic impact for our local communities. I look forward to seeing it grow into a signature event for the region.”
University leaders echo that excitement, highlighting what the weekend means for their institutions. “The Shreveport Kickoff Classic unites alumni, students, and fans in a shared moment of pride, while also signaling the limitless possibilities ahead for Grambling State,” said Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., President of Grambling State University. “Together, we celebrate where we’ve been and embrace the bold journey before us.”
Langston University leaders added that the Classic is an important stage for their students and alumni. “Langston University is proud to participate in the Shreveport Kickoff Classic alongside Grambling State University—two institutions that represent the strength, pride, and enduring legacy of HBCUs,” said Ruth Ray Jackson, Ph.D., President of Langston University. “This event is more than a football game; it’s a celebration of tradition and excellence. We look forward to bringing the Lion pride to Independence Stadium for what promises to be an unforgettable experience for our students, alumni, and fans.”
The game’s reach extends beyond football. This weekend of family, football, and fun is expected to bring a positive economic impact to Shreveport-Bossier through hotel stays, restaurant visits, and attractions.
Tourism leaders also emphasize the event’s potential to elevate the region’s visibility as a destination. “Hosting the inaugural Shreveport Kickoff Classic is a great opportunity to further elevate our community as a sports destination,” says Stacy Brown, President & CEO of Visit Shreveport-Bossier. “This game will draw fans from across the region, support local businesses, and increase visibility for Independence Stadium for future events like the Independence Bowl.”
