Organizers of the Sunflower Trail and Festival, a popular annual event that takes place in and around the Village of Gilliam in northern Caddo Parish, have canceled the 2020 festival planned for Saturday, June 20. However, the festival’s annual sunflower photography contest will proceed with online voting and a new, extended submission deadline of July 3. Watch the festival’s Facebook page for more information on the photography contest. A brochure and entry form will be posted soon.

“We regret having to make this decision,” festival volunteer and organizer Karen Logan said via e-mail. “We’ll be publicizing the sunflower photography contest on Facebook, and there’ll be voting on Facebook after the photos are posted. This was popular last year!”

Logan said that the public is still encouraged to drive the Sunflower Trail (visit the official website for a Sunflower Trail map) and that the sunflowers are expected to begin blooming in mid-June and continue blooming through early July. There is no charge to drive the Sunflower Trail, which is located along Hwy. 3049 between Shreveport and Gilliam. The sunflower fields that bloom along this route each summer are one of the region’s most popular spots for portrait photography.

The Sunflower Trail and Festival is one of the most popular annual events held along the Boom or Bust Byway, a scenic route that passes through rural communities in Caddo, Webster, Bossier and Claiborne Parishes. Anyone considering a drive to enjoy or photograph the sunflowers should download the free Boom or Bust Byway app in Google Play or the Apple Store. Fire up the app during your trip to enjoy a virtual guided tour while you drive.
